I have used Thunderbird with POP for many years (using my own domain via Google Apps). It works perfectly since I can access all my emails that comes in during the day wherever I am, and then by the end of the day download them all to my desktop computer (which then empties the online inbox).
Recently I purchased a Samsung Galaxy S (AT&T Captivate version) which currently runs Android 2.1. I initially configured the phone with POP. The problem with that was that every time it refreshed/checked for new incoming email, it removed all current email on the phone and oddly enough placed them in the Trash folder in the online interface. Basically, it looked like I logged in online, marked all messages in the inbox and then moved them all to Trash. I had the same behavior with other clients that I tried on the phone so I eventually gave up and opted for IMAP instead. Initially this seemed like it worked just fine, but I then noticed by the end of the day that Thunderbird did not download all the messages that were located in the inbox. So I simply logged in online, marked all messages in the inbox as unread, and then tried to download them with Thunderbird again. But it still did not work.
So now I'm in a pickle here. I want emails on my phone so that I can check it during the day, but I also want to empty the online inbox by downloading them to Thunderbird using POP.
So what should/could I do?

I have got exactly the same problem using galaxy s............. Iwent through exactly the same procedures as MockY using several sifferent email providers with no success.
samsung tech uk were absolute s**t the sanctimonious plonker i spoke to on both occasions after waitying 30 mins each time tried to blame my smartphone provider then my isp provider virgin who give them their due tried to help but to no advail. I went back to samsung again and this time there cop out was to say they dont support the email software the problem is android ( why do they preload such crap then) after spending many hours and every possible configuration of pop3 imap4 I had to settle for using the forwarding option in my isp account to push mail to a gmail account, this works fine (do not forget to tick leaving emails on server otherwise the forwarding will remove emails by default stored on isp server) The only problem here is i use imap to cordinate the removal of emails from several email clients and i can find no way of sychronising the removal of emails from my phone via gmail to delete same from such accounts.
At the end of the day samsung tech support sucks! we can wait for android 2.2 and hope this issue gets resolved as the phone is very good value but iam considering sending back and changing to iphone as i know the push mail option works
