Internet access

hello everyone!
i have samsung-galaxy-i7500. and i want to know if this phone connect automatically to Internet or not because yesterday i get an email from gmail and it knew about it and there aren't an wifi near by so how it connect? and how do i now to what Internet if to 3g portal(wap) or 3g internet?
and what is the icon g and to lines? what does it mean?

Hi, there

If there is no Wi-fi hotspot around you, you can choose to connect with 3G/GPRS.
G is 2G connection icon.
Connection is dependent on your operator and firmware version. I have an open market test unit so I set it up in APN (Wireless network setting).

There are free apps for network traffic counting if you want to monitor the usage.
