I heard the mytouch looks smooth and the htc sense theme is cool. But the nexus one has a better screen the the mytouch and it can compete with others but its media, contact, and message display is oldschool kind of like the g1 so I'm kind of stuck which one should I get

I was kind of in the same boat as you. I had the G1 since it first came out. I got her the MT. At the time I still had the G1. Initially, I was in love with the MT This thing is VERY FAST compared to the G1. The screen is a lot nicer than my G1. A big thing for me was having a physical keyboard (not having one was a deal breaker for me). I was totally hooked on the MT. Then I got the N1.
Now my wife's phone seems junky. All the extra junk they put on doesn't do anything for me. I've tried the genius button and it works about half the time. The other half it doesn't do what i want it to. The my faves application (you can't get rid of) is totally annoying, anytime any one of those people tweets Facebooks or farts it bugs you, I hate it. My wife hates it too,, it's off and will never be turned on again. The keyboard is only a 3 line so that takes some getting used to. All in all I like the MT rooted without all the crapware tmobile puts on it would be good but the Nexus one is better.
I prefer the N1 hands down. There is no junkware, I'll add that myself thank you. The tethering is very cool but I don't use it much. The onscreen keyboard is still something I'm getting used to but I'm not missing the physical keyboard at all.
The bottom line it both phones are a vast improvement over the G1. You'd be happy with both. I like the N1 but I would not be sad about getting a MT.
On a side note I'm not rooting anything until the warranty runs out. I got the N1 replaced because the external speaker stopped working no questions asked except for "is it rooted?". If you root you loose the warranty. Just something you might want to consider.
