I am constantly getting a connection error message under the INBOX heading when checking email. When I shut down and restart the phone it works okay for a while.

I also cannot delete any email from the TRASH. It goes away and then pops back in there. My trash folder is getting huge. Is this a G1 issue or gmail issue?

I am getting the same error message, but with a POP3 account, not the GMail account. I've been searching around trying to figure out if this is HTC, T-Mobile, or Android related in nature.

It's frustrating to be forced to delete then re-create the profile just to see if I have new mail.

Any additional info is appreciated.

I have the same problem. My inbox says "connection error" and will not check email. If I cycle the phone off and on it will work again for a few hours. Many people are reporting this problem on the internet. I've searched for a resolution but have found none.

I fixed this problem!

I got rid of the G1 and bought a Sony Ericsson X1 Xperia with Windows Mobile 6.1.
It syncs with outlook and gets push mail.

Trying not to be too pedantic, but that isn't fixing the problem it's avoiding the problem

After a while I figured it would feel better to stop beating my head against the desk.

I rarely get this problem, I think I have experienced it twice over a period of 2 months. I think the connection problem is more of a network problem than anything, have you tried calling customer support?

A solution to the problem is too use the free K9 application instead of the built-in application. I just downloaded it today but people on the t-mobile forum says it fixed the problem.

I am trying out a MOTOROLA DROID phone from Verizon and configured the default EMAIL application for POP3 against my Exchange 2007 Server. Although it connected (after setting the security to TDS on both the DROID, and updating my Exchange Server Host Connector to check the allow multi-domain TDS checkbox), the application would constantly fail -- when I wasn't actively in the application. A box would continually come up saying the Email App had crapped out and prompted me to "Force Close" it. After reading paulseaone's post, I went to the MARKET application, located, downloaded, and configured K-9. I tried POP3 and IMAP (ultimately settling on IMAP for the convenience of not having duplicate copies of my email on my phone and mail server) -- NO CRASHES! I then had to go into the default EMAIL application and hunt around until I could figure out how to DELETE the POP3 profile that I had created there. Once I got rid of that, NO MORE ANNOYING FORCE CLOSE messages and K-9 working like a CHARM. In fact, I have K-9 setup to connect via IMAP to both my personal Exchange 2007 Server and my Corporate Email which is hosted by Rackspace.
