Hi, is there any free app that will backup my settings, contacts, apps etc, even what i have on the homescreens etc..?

I have been looking at one called titanium backup, but i cannot get it to function, everytime i install it it says error installing on root, and i cannot find anyway to actualy allow it to install on root, are there any other programs that will install easier?

also, if i ever did back it all up, and the backup files were on the sdcard, would resetting the phone back to factory defaults delete everything on the card, this would be a bit pointless if it did, it would make backing the phone up pointless.

thanks

there is a PC suite for android developed by a chinese company
and it includes the backup and restore fuctions as well.
it's called "91 PC Suite"
the GUI is crap and translation is dumb because first run, the program starts in chinese
and the user has to change the language manually.
it got me a while to find the language settings menu, of course it was also in chinese.
but the backup works really well.

it's been 2 months since you posted this thread but
if you are still looking for something, here it is.

You can download m:IQ Live for FREE from the Android Market... This is like a free MobileMe for Android and all other smartphone platforms

You can sync contacts, text messages, calendar events, calls, photos, videos, and internet favorites from your phones to their private web-based m:IQ account. Content instantly transfers between the phone and the web without requiring any user interaction. You can also send text from your computer and input contacts or data online which pushes to your phone. Pretty Sweet!

By root Titanium backup means your phone has to be rooted. If it is chances are you have nandroid installed. Nandroid works if you want to backup everything including your ROM (After you rooted your phone) and Titanium Backup is great for restoring your apps and settings after you flash to a new ROM.

If you are not rooted you can use apps like Wave Secure or Lookout to backup you contacts, sms, and media.

Probably you can try a free software called Android Manager - WiFi.
It helps to back up SMS / photo / video / contacts / calendar / app.
you can also use it to manage and install app.

The way it back up contacts is by
synchronizing Contacts/Calendar with Outlook,Outlook Express and Windows Contacts.
