well if u mean heavy as in on the phone all the time, then no. i dont use my phone that much. Im at univeristy for most of the day then in the evening im at work, so i only use the phone for the occasional phone call or text message. i only use the internet for like 1 hour max throughout the whole day.
what difference would it make if t-mobile sent me replacement battery, apart from being able to switch the batteries when one of them dies. ill try it anyway, see what they got to say about it.

It could be that the battery you're currently using is defective in some way that's all.
For that kind of use you shouldn't need to charge it 3x a day mate.

K, I'm in NYC today interviewing all day. The phone is fully charged and OFF during the interview process. When I'm done I turn it on and talk to my wife for about 20 min. Send a few txt msgs, get on a train to Boston and listen to music fore about an hour or a little more...dead battery. I drain the battery to shutoff EVERY time and have update to 30. I hope there is a solid solution soon cuz I do love the phone!

There must be some defective batteries. Mine isn't "great" by any stretch when compared to my old WM iPaq, but it lasts at least the day. Obviously, some things eat more battery than others and I could kill it in hours, but in general, I charge it when I sleep at it's good to go for general phone, text, and browsing. I do not use the GPS and very little for media. But when I want to drain the battery I do use WikiTunes for music. But I tend to get about 45 - 60 minutes of music play time (with the screen off) after the battery low message.
The latest RC30 did improve my time to get what I get now. And more importantly, the device doesn't get hot like it used to.

I'm really excited about an open source platform that will let us do what we want with our own hardware. I carried an iphone until the screen broke while under warranty, apple wanted to charge me the price of a new phone for WARRANTY REPAIR. It's an awesome device but Apple treats you like you should be thanking them for the right to own it.
But I digress....
I was wondering if any of you guys have tried killing the 3g, gps, bluetooth and wifi and how much that helps. Battery life is one of the biggest things I look for in a phone, I just don't see myself buying a phone with such a bad battery life. It's rated for 6 hours talk, but you guys make it sound much, much worse :\

Called TMobile Uk with the same issue. They said they are very aware of the problem as lots of people have complained about it.
They said the Nokia N95 had the same issue when it first came out, which was resolved by a software update and are hoping that the G1 can be fixed by a software update in a similar way.
Fingers crossed

Thanks for the update Col, good to hear that it's something they're aware of and hopefully working to resolve.

I just replaced my original G1 with a new one from the Tmobile store.. My original phone had horrible battery life.. I even had a replacement battery sent to me with no luck.... I would after about 3 hours with only phone mode active I was already at 30 percent!!!
With the new phone, I can leave all features on (3G, Wi-Fi, GPS) and go all day. At about 10PM at night I still have about 40 percent left..
I really believe that something in the hardware changed....
