Same problem with max 3 hours. Using video or mp3 and it's touch and go for 2.5 hours.
Complained to T-Mobile (business account so they never leave you on hold or mess you around!). However their first response was to put me to HTC. Went through whole process (IMEI number etc etc) and was promised a sympathetic and quick response.

What I suggested to both T-Mobile and HTC was to replace current battery but also to buy a spare, just in case.

3 days later chased up HTC to be told that as this is labelled for T-Mobile they truly want no involvement with the handset whatsoever. They will not sell parts or accessories and will not list them online. I must go back to T Mobile.

Just did so and unsurprisingly they have no stocks of any parts for the G1 whatsoever. Only thing they suggest - and am doing - is to replace the whole phone.

A real pain as I am unsure just how much personal info remains on handset. I've reset to factory default, but still concerned.

What I may do - and it is extremely improper - is in the return box to accidentally forget to return the current battery, even if it is iffy. It can then be used as a spare. I think they won't be pleased, but retaining the battery is the norm when my Sidekick was replaced (many many times!)

I've done similar battery shenanigans in the past - always nice to have a space

If you've done all the proper steps to restore to factory settings then you'll be fine.

1. Power off handset
2. Hold the Home key and the End key for ~20 seconds until you see a traingle icon with an exclamation point in the middle.
3. Open up the keyboard and press 'ALT+W'.

The g1 battery life SUCKS, I realy like the phone everything in it is great but the email feature isn't that good I wish it would work how the blackberry email works then it would be good. Iam beginning to hate this phone I took it off the charger at 6:30 this morning by 11:20 it was almost dead. So then I put it back on the charger by 12:30 I took it off n around 5:30 I died on me again. I have to charge the phone about 3 to 4 times a day, so iam pissed off about this I call tmobile n they told me they are working on the battery problem cause everyone is complaining about it so I said ok that's fine but then I got pissed off again so I call them to complain again but this time they told me they are gonna send me a extra batter for free n I DON'T have to send the other battery back.

I've been using a Moto-Q phone (Windows Mobile OS) for the last 1.5 years and I have to constantly charge it. It seems to use a lot of power when it checks for email, so I have it check every 15 minutes during peak business hours. Even then, I'm lucky if it lasts for 8 hours if I don't constantly charge it.

Sounds like the G1 has similar problems. I'm not sure what T-Mobile can do about it, since WiFi, email, 3G, etc. all seem to suck a lot of power. They could certainly put in a bigger battery, but that would add more bulk to the phone. They will really need to do some better power management in the OS to help extend the battery life.

Mine could last me a solid day and half of regular use. I guess I'm just lucky.

ok i used to have a really bad problem with the battery dieing too,

but all i did was let it die completely.
recgarge it,
die completely
recharge it,
die completely
and recharge it and now it works great, i get a whole days use out of it, playing games, web browsing, email, the works
and my battery is at 30% which really isnt bad.
but before that my phone would be dead within 5-6 hours after charging it.

So I followed the Andor's advice and restored the factory settings by doing this:

1. Power off handset
2. Hold the Home key and the End key for ~20 seconds until you see a traingle icon with an exclamation point in the middle.
3. Open up the keyboard and press 'ALT+W'.

I didn't lose the contacts or the photos on my SD card. Everything else was gone as it should, meaning my wall paper, shortcuts, messages, call logs, etc. And I had to reregister my gmail. It kind of sucked for the first five minutes. The good news is this:

I fully charged my battery to 100% and unplugged the charger at 5AM. I was up the whole night, yes. When I woke up at 11 am the battery was around 80something %. At around 5PM, 12 hrs later, it was about 60% full. It's 9:50PM now and my battery is 36% full! This ofcourse is with 3G and gps turned off, along with wireless and blue tooth turned off and without recharing a phone at all since 5am this morning! I have talked for at least 2 hours today and have done some texting. No browsing today.

This is nothing like what my batterly life was like since I got G1 about 10 days ago. The battery used to last 5-6 hours max even with 3G,gps, wireless and blue tooth off.

I agree G1 and blackberry bold which I own has same battery issue. even 1 or 1 1/2 hr or web surfing or bes usage makes battery cry for life. I ended up buying extended battery and its working good for me. don't know why these guys test before sending the device to customers. here is extended battery that might help you http://www.fommy.com/view-full-page.asp?skuno=81931

Thanks Keegan. I bought a Tekkeon TekCharge MP1800. This great little battery pack is very convenient for me when I am traveling. It allows me to refill my G1 more than two times. I never have to worry about how to save the battery when I have MP1800 with me. Amzon has it for free shipping.
