Hello everyone,
As the tile says, I'm new here and new on Android.
I'm quite used to windows mobile, have used it for many years and decided it's time to try something new.
So I bought myself a new toy: the HTC HERO.
Like it so far but it's quite disconcerting... Read everywhere that there is a new version android 1.6 available. I tried to read as much as possible and still don't get it
Here we go:
It seems my Hero is firmawre 1.5. Do I need to upgrade to 1.6?
If yes, how do I do this?

I tried to go on the android market to download a few apps. No success with my PC, no success with my Hero in wifi. It it absolutely neccessary to do this using 3g with the Hero?

Thank you very much for your help, and sorry if this has been asked already elsewhere on the forum, couldn't find it.

Take care.

Hai, first of all, as far as im aware, the new release of android, 1.6 (donut) is only avalable to developers, so dont worry about that, second of all, the 1.5 you are talking about i beleve reffers to the HTC own update that recantly came out. The donut update should automaticly download ( i think). so just chill! It should be coming out soon and beleve me, you will know when it happens

Thank you Dayl3.

The 1.5 is the firmware version of my Hero. It makes sense that it is be the latest as I only bought it 4 days ago. I'll be looking closely for when the next update comes out.

As for the Android Market, is it only accessible from my phone or is there a way to download apps from the store on my laptop and intall them to the phone when it's connected on the laptop? This is to reduce the 3g data traffic to try to keep my bill reasonable.

Once again thanks a lot for your answer.

Well, there is no market on the computer, but the phone should use Wifi instead of 3g if it is available, i'm guessing it is if you have a laptop. You can download apps from the intermawebs (i think they are .apk files) but its probible best if you steer clear from them, just in case.

Thanks for the swift answer.
I've tried downloading apps on the phone using wifi, but was not able to do so. Maybe I did something wrong. I'll try again later.
Take care.

Works on my machine..

Joking aside, what does your Hero show in

Menu > Settings > Wireless controls > Mobile Network

Is this checked? If it is, it should say 'Use phone for data connection when Wi-Fi is unavailable' -indicating that Wi-Fi is its first port of call if connected...
