Hmmm... Interesting. If you go to messages and settings you can scroll down to notification settings and select sounds. But there doesn't appear to be an option to add your own MP3's...
I'll investigate this further because I find it hard to believe you can't customise further...
Thanks - I have had another look. Interestingly when I have assigned a ringtone for calls etc that one ringtone appears in the list of music files to assign within Handcent for SMS tones. Not in ChompSMS though.
Same for Ringolite etc...I would have thought this would be straight forward...
Just out of interest is ChompSMS easy to set up..? And can you go back to using the default SMS program after you have used it..? I half fancy giving it a go but I don’t want to break something that is working ok…
I had an idea, I thought that by using a file manager to copy the mp3 file into the system/media/audio/notifications folder that it would show up in the list of available notification tones.
Alas, the phone will not allow me to paste the file into the destination folder, I'm guessing that maybe there is some protection against intrusion into the system folder.
try looking for an app called "tone picker" this allows you to add an mp3 from you music as a custom ring tone
also try creating a number of folder on your sd card that android then can use "see" media files
i have
alarms
notifications
ringtones
also a number of one with pictures for the gallery

im new here and not sure you have fixed this but the first thing i did when i got my new hero was to sort out this anoying problem with the ring/sms tone.
i found out on the net that if you creat a series of folders on your mem card like this....
'(on sdcard)/media/audio/notifications'
place any sound or mp3 files in there and they should show up in the list of avalable sounds.
also i found to change sms sounds you have to go in to your sms messages and press menu then settings and select sound in there.
there is also i nice app called ringdroid that allows u to chop any mp3 song and make it ur ringotone/notification. its like audacity but for ur phone. so all the cutting of the song and previewing is done on ur phone...prob best app for me so far and u can zoom in and out to get the exact part of the song you want.

Just a note on this - Ringdroid's default file save format is m4a, but some apps don't support this for ringtones (e.g. aContacts - supports ogg) - worth having a file converter up your sleeve like dbPowerAmp as well, in case that's why the app doesn't see the tone.

Hey Bumfluff,
That didn't work for me. Although the mp3 file copied successfully to the subfolder, the track did not show up in the list when I went to change the notification sound.
