Google mail (gmail) will synch automatically with your phone in both directions…
All you need to do is log onto Google mail in your phone… (Obviously using the same gmail account details you use on the PC).
Then, the easiest way to manage contacts is from the PC logged into gmail… Just add contact details and photos and 3 minutes later they appear in your phone… Anybody you add to the Starred in Android Group will also automatically appear in your favourites list on the 5th menu from the left (default location)…

ok, the hero manual says:
1. On the All tab, tap Add contact.
2. Select the Contact type, for example Google or Exchange. This determines
which account the contact will sync with. For more information, see “Contact
sources” in this chapter.
but when i try to add a contact, i only have this choices: Phone and SIM
any ideas?

That would almost suggest it doesn't recognise you as signed into Google... I know this is wrong. However, gmail is for American users and Google mail is for the UK. I know they are interchangeable in theory and I sent myself a message to gmail just to check...
However, I am logged into Google mail not GMail and this seems to be the crucial difference...

Gmail accounts sync with the phone, Outlook contacts sync with the phone via HTC Sync and Outlook contacts sync with Gmail via Google's sync application.
Sounds great but in reality after attempting to sync my contacts with PC, phone and Gmail I have ended up with 2 of every contact on my phone, one under "phone" and the other under "google". This is not what I was trying to achieve, can anyone tell me if and how to resolve this?

same thing happened to me and its a pain. Either only use gmail contacts or outlook
using both is a recipe for a mess !

Go to your contacts, press menu, View, then pick which one you want displayed.

No imaq, I wanted to sync outlook, the phone and Google as one, not Outlook to phone and Google to phone running side by side.
No point in having two sets. The idea to sync all three is great but clearly the phone won't do it.
Shame.
