Syncing contacts to gmail

Try going to your gmail account on your computer

Go to Settings

Go to Imports

There is a button to Show Duplicates
Or on your whole list

If you select two similar names you will get an option to Merge them.

Worked for me. I had two sets of info, one that was ported over from my phone at the Sprint store and one from the imported AOL account.

Be VERY careful. Syncing to Gmail Contacts from teh HTC Hero does NOT work as you might expect!

I deleted my messy 6000 contacts on my HTC Hero in order to 'sync' afterwards with my trim 3000 contact list on Gmail.

WELL! Guess what it did!
I signed onto Gmail with my main computer and watched as my number of contacts counted DOWN.

It DID NOT load my now empty HTC Hero from Gmail Contacts, INSTEAD it decided to DELETE all my online contacts!

^ I think Gmail now has a system in place to allow you to restore contacts altered or deleted over the past 30 days, probably in part related to the 2-way syncing of devices with Gmail and people wanting to use the service as a backup.

I'm having a bit of a problem getting contacts I have created on my phone to upload to my Gmail contacts. Works fine the other way around. Any ideas?
