So I got a Hero the other day. Its pretty cool but I agree with the reviews... its underpowered. Most stuff is fine, but video playback is very poor. If your looking for a phone to watch your downloaded series or a film dont bother with this phone. Im debating keeping it really. Its funny because htc must have tried it and realised but kept quiet about it. The flash playback is weak but kind of watchable. The bbc feed is watchable too. I dont want to make comparisons to THAT phone but I will . THat phone plays back video real nice and the hero can not compete in any way. Well rant over. hehe .

I will compress some video and see what is the optimum size is. Lets hope something can be done.

I was wondering about this. What is the best app for playing video?

Also, when you've tried playback was it with any compression at all, or full sized film for example?

Thanks.

I've been using the encoder from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=467112 and watch it in the Albums program.

Whilst the video is watchable, there seems to be a mild slowdown every few seconds followed by a catch-up which is a bit tiresome. The same thing seems to happen in YouTube so I'm guessing it's pretty fundamental. Hopefully HTC will come out with a speedy firmware update like they did with the original Diamond (which was rushed to market a bit to quickly...)

maybe you are not encoding it properly?

I am using a program called 4easysoft total video converter, but any program of your choosing that will allow you to change settings should be fine. I have dvd quality playback on my hero with no playback problems (jitter, skipping, etc) using these settings:

container = .MP4
encoder = H.264
Frame rate = 23.976
Resolution = 320 x 480
Video bitrate = 768 kbps
audio encoder = AAC
Audio bitrate = 96kbps

Thankyou, was hoping there would be a way to get some half decent vid playback. I love my Hero, I am used to a windows phone but fancied a change.
