Does android voice command work?

I have been trying to figure out how to use this voice command by google. No matter what I try to do, the ONLY command that works correctly is when I tell it to call a certain number. If I say "call bob smith" it does not understand and goes to a web search mode. I think this is a waste of time if it does not do as advertised. I can't use the TEXT mode, the EMAIL mode, or any other mode.

All of my phone contacts have the little google symbol next to them. I'm thinking that it means that they are synced with my google account, but when I go to it, they are not there. Do my contacts have to be in my gmail account before this can work?
Has ANYONE ever gotten this app to work, and if so, HOW?

Update:
I just did a sync of my phone contacts with my gmail account. Then I tried the CALL, EMAIL, TEXT commands, and they all worked. Maybe the help video that Google puts out should inform everyone about this first.

I use Vlingo and that works pretty well.

The only thing I find annoying is that is goes on forever if it doesn't recognize a command. Also, it needs a data connection ...... I guess that is two things.

Voice calling works, but the email and text messaging doesn't work very well unfortunatley. It never transcribed my voice very well and it doesn't do a very good job with anybody else I know who has tried it. I use a work around and use the Voice Mail app to send voice messages when I don't have time or want to type.
