Thanks for the info!
but... it worked before mounting was required. HMM this must have been added for some reason of data corruption I assume. I have bee messing with unplugging, trying different pc's and rebooting for hours. At least I can put my photos on ebay now!

I just purchased a G1 from T-Mobile and have this same situation. I have tried rebooting the computer and the phone and switched to different cards. There is never an option to use as a mass storage device under the Settings/SD Card and Phone Storage section. I have the default firmware that came with the G1.
I appreciate any support.

I bought my G1 the day it was released in the UK, it was working when I first plugged my phone into my pc via the usb cable, however when I decided to plug my G1 into the pc the following day I, my pc would not detect my G1.
I do not get any usb notification on my pc
There is no usb storage setting under settings/SD Cars & Phone Storage/
I only have 2 available options Unmount/eject SD card and Factory Data Reset
I am using Vista Home, and I am logged in as administrator
My computer does not detect the G1 when its connected via the supplied usb cable (have tried other usb cables to no avail)
I have read the other solutions on these forums and others, and none of them work for me, and I still cannot access my SD card via my phone!!

Seems like were in the same boat.
I should add I am running xp. When viewing the device manager the G1 shows up as unknown device when I plug it in.

My new G1 from T-Mobile had the same problem others describe here, apparently unrecognized micro sd card. I replaced the supplied 1GB card with another card I had around, and the new card showed up. Now, after doing the "mount" thing I can see the device on my Windows XP computer. It did not create a new removable drive letter, rather, it re-used an existing removeable drive letter, which is interesting. (BTW, I think the idea of "pulling down" a tiny little icon in the corner of the screen is poor UI design, very hard to do with big fingers anyway, had to Google to here to figure that part out).
So now my only question is, what is the drive format that should be used on G1 microsd cards? The card I had laying around was an old Sansa MP3 player card, so it is formatted as FAT.

After poking around a bit more, I discovered that even though the supplied 1GB microsd card displays "unavailable" in the SD card menu for "Total space" and "Available space", if you mount it using the inobvious technique described earlier in this thread, it does show up as a removeable disk and you can see what's on the disk (11 .mp3 files and some album art). The disk is formatted as FAT. I can sync music to it using Windows Media player with no problem, and the music plays on the G1. So the only issue seems to be that the G1 can't determine the amount of space and free space on the card for some reason. Linux users can apparently fix this using the procedure described here: http://rivviepop.wordpress.com/2008/...ed-up-sd-card/

Hi,
I have the same / similar issue.
I have XP (os) on my PC with service pack 3.
The G1 is on TMOBILE with a 8 gb card.
I was hoping to transfer videos / mp3 etc to the card to play on the G1.
When I plug the USB into the PC, it recongnices a device has connected, but when I try to transfer stuff, it says ''insert a disk''
What should I do to resolve this?
What is this r29 update I have seen mentioned on the forum? And how do I mount the card?
Appreciate your support
