Email and IM question

I heard that email and IM uses yours SMS's to send them. Is there any way I can do this without using up my 400 messages? But if it's a Google Phone, why do you have to use the 400 messages, I mean it's the first thing you do, sign in to your Gmail. They went over board if you use your messages. If you have unlimited messages you would have no problem. But using SMS for IM and email? Are you serious Google?

BTW I bought my G1 off LetsTalk.com and it didn't say if there was the 400 messages, if you know please answer if it comes with them.

You heard wrong. Email and IM's are sent / received over the data network (3g, wifi etc.).

to clarify gmail, pop/imap email and GOOGLE TALK don't use SMS. The native app for AIM, MSN, Yahoo! Chat DOES use SMS.
