The G1 in Norway?

I am from Norway, but im going to New York in a couple of weeks and i'd like to buy this phone, but to do so i can't have the contract (or what its called) with T-Mobile. So is there a way to avoid this so I can use the phone with my own simcard?

On my iphone i just had to press NO on a question about the contract when i plugged the phone to the computer. But that was bought in London. Hope someone can give me the answers im looking for

According to the G1's specs you'll have no problem using the phone in Europe, im just not sure how the whole 'unlocked for $399' policy works with T-Mobile.

Okay, so I can cancell with T-Mobile right away? And this wil cost $399?
Want to buy this phone before it comes to Norway, if it does, because I guess it will be priced similar to the iPhone and that cost between $1300 and $3000
