I was bored today and, after reading I can install Debian on my phone last night, decided to set off to do that. Got through the rooting procedure just fine. Now I sit here with a rooted G1 and I'm a bit unsure where to go next. I'd like to get Debian still but I probably won't do that immediately...I'm kinda tired of messing with this thing right now...lol. I've noticed a few pros and cons of doing this though:

Pros: The obvious world that opens up to you when you root...all the apps you can run and all that.
The ROM I have, JF1.41 allows multitouch which is kinda cool.

Cons: I'll have to completely re-set-up my phone again. I backed up my SD before doing this cuz I knew formatting it would erase it, so that's no big deal but having to reinstall my apps is a bit of a pain. Oh well I guess. Only problem here is that some progs don't want to install now with the custom stuff I have on the phone.
I don't have my V-keyboard any more! I used that thing A LOT! How can I get the Cupcake functionality (V-keyboard is gone...I assume a2dp is as well...) AND have root access still? I'd imagine I just have to download and install the right ROM but I dunno.

Is there a way to go back to how it was if I feel like it? Cuz I really don't know what to do now...lol The thing did MORE before rooting than it does now! I'd like to get some skins and stuff but don't really care a whole lot about all that...I just dunno what to do now.

I'm pretty scatterbrained right now. Been messing with this thing for over 4 hrs now and my mind is swirling. So, to keep it simple:

What should I do now?
Can I go back to normal Cupcake if I want?
Anyone here get Debian running on their phone?
How can I keep root AND have the Cupcake stuff (V-keyboard, for instance)

Any info, words of wisdom, insight, links, whatever is greatly appreciated!

All you have to do is load the rom that you want and yes all modified roms will have your vk board in it. If you want a theme you can install that also, you just have to make sure the theme is compatible with the rom you are using.

Thanks for the reply...even if the thread is a bit old...lol

I've been running The Dude Edition v1.0 for 4-5 mo now. I LOVE it...it seems to work BETTER since doing this.

Now I'm considering swapping on the Hero ROM...anyone know where I can get it?

I have alot of the hero roms saved on my computer. If you know which one you want to try I can give you a link. Have you set your phone up to load a hero rom? Do you have a class 6 card? I just thought loading hero up was a dissappoinment to me.

Which one do I wanna try? I didn't know there was more than one! What's the differences in them?

Loading a Hero ROM is just like loading any other custom ROM, right?...from a .zip file and all? I've done that. I'm running a custom ROM now.

Class 6 card? That a memory card with another partition and apps to SD and all? If so, no. I didn't think doing all that sounded worth it, really.

Speaking of being worth it, I decided to skip the MyTouch and wait for the Hero to replace my beloved G1...then I saw the Hero on SPRINT! I could buy an onlocked one but they're expensive so I am thinking about turning my current G1 into a "Hero"...but, you mention being a bit disappointed...is it worth it? I REALLY like my G1. By FAR the best phone I've ever had. Should I even bother?

I've been out of the loop for a couple months...what's the most current ROM that everyone's using? Have there been any breakthroughs or anything? I am running "The Dude Edition v1.0" right now and it's great. Anything new that might warrent "fixing" this thing when it's not broken?

Look forward to the feedback! Thanks!!!

Loading a hero rom is just like flashing any other rom with an update.zip or if you have cyanogen's 1.4 recovery or ra mens (I know that ain't right) recovery you can flash any zip without it being labeled update. But remember if you flash a hero you need to have the danger spl loaded. Also just have to make sure your card is partitioned to the requirements (fat32, ext2/3/4, and linux-swap). If you don't know what class your card is look at it and there will be a number in what looks like a little c. There are class 2, 4, and 6. If there is no number on it then it is a class 2. For hero to really be workable you should have a class 6 since that is the fastest transfer speed sd card. The reason I say hero is a dissappointment to me is I need a fast and stable phone and hero didn't give it to me. I know it's come a long way since I've loaded it but it's not that important to me. You will have a loading screen trying to go back to the home screen (that problem has seem to gotten better), of course BT doesn't work, at the time led's didn't work (I know they have led's working now). Also at the time hero roms were having issues with recieving text messages but that was worked out plus there was work arounds on that issue. But like I said it's not stable enough for me, I need my phone way to much to have to worry about anything taking to long or whatever. You have the jacheroski, drizzy's, mlign, and others. But like I would say and everyone other on the other forum I'm on, you just have to try each one to see what suites you. But if I were you I would load like cyanogens 4.2 or 4.0.4 and then you can load a hero theme and install the weather widget donate and it will be almost identical to a hero rom. I use to rock the dudes build til he got a job and stopped building roms so you will be amazed of all the new features out there. Let me know if you need anything. I have all the roms going back to day one plus most of the themes that go along with the roms.

Awesome! Thanks for all the help! I love this kinda stuff...lol

That was one of the biggest hang ups for me...all the little things that don't work on the G1-hero...bluetooth (which I use CONSTANTLY...) being a prime example. As for skinning the G1 to look like a hero, that's not my goal. I want a hero for the functionality and the HARDWARE! The G1's 192MB ram pales in comparison to the Hero's 256MB and you can feel this with the G1 bogging down quite often. Even if I DID load the Hero rom on the G1, I doubt it would work well at all with the RAM deficit.

I'd have to look into the SD card stuff and danger spl and all that cuz that's all pretty greek to me. Been out of the loop for a little while and must have missed this stuff.

What's new in the G1 ROM world? Perhaps I can swap out a new theme for a change...maybe add some new stuff...any recommendations? Also...is there any way to back up not only my apps (apps to sd that actually works...??? last I heard it kinda wasn't really useful yet), but my settings, bookmarks, etc if I do decide to reflash? I backed up my SD when I flashed before but forgot to take into account all the bookmarks and other random stuff (and all my apps!) that weren't on the SD. I lost them all. That sucked pretty hard core in the bookmark area.

Bit of an off-topic, will the Hero even work on T-mobile? I know it's quad band but the hero doesn't have a sim card, does it since it's CDMA?
