Howto Get Root Access On Your G1

I've seen a few requests floating around the forum for a guide on how to gain root access to the G1.

This sticky will offer some links and information to guides on how best to
achieve this.

So what are the benefits of gaing root access on the G1?

• You can install a full Linux distribution, like Debian.
• You can run applications that require root, like Screenshot and Auto Rotate your Browser and or any other application.
• You can install the latest Android build directly from the Android source tree.
• Customize your boot image.
• Create full backups of the state of your phone.
• Create custom ROMs.
• Install Applications to your SD Card to save space.
• Use your phone as a tether to connect your computer/laptop to the internet.
• Turn your phone into a wireless router that provides internet access.

Please Note: Rooting/Hacking/Flashing your G1 should not be attempted unless you have a good understanding of exactly what you are doing. Please read through the steps thoroughly before attempting.

Can you please explain to me what Linux and Debian are and how that would benifit me? As far as I know it has something to do with letting me customize my phone more?

Yes Mr. Scott, it let's you basically run any app you want on your G1(almost) using debian linux.

Remember, that installing and running Debian on your G1 is for advanced users. Even I am having a hard time installing it, and I am a systems admin... lol

Look at it this way, if you are just a regular phone user that likes to play games and fool around with fart machines rooting and debian are not for you...

If you are like me and administrate multiple linux servers in a datacenter, you need a good ssh client installed....

well i've got lots of apps and i rarely play the one game i have (battle for mars). i really just waant to impove the phones functionality

i have a problem guys should i get the my touch if i have a g1 but get this i taked tombile in to letting me buy it and a super discounted price since i had the g1 exchagned like 15 times so they say i can get it for $119/ ill still have my g1 but the my touch as alot of free space. or should i just root my know and use my 16gb SD card as internal memory and in october im getting the hero from sprint so im going to have 3 android phones guys i dont know what to do help me please

I rooted my phone a while back when I got it. I was able to use superuser and other rooted only apps but now it seems I unrooted my phone tryin to get cyanogen on. It still says its a dev phone but can't seem to be able to use SU. My question is, did I accidentally or could I have unrooted my phone without knowing. Thanks in advance.
