From what I've read, the Canadian version of the Motorola Milestone uses the same GPRS/EDGE and 3G HSDPA/HSUPA connections as here in the US. Would an unlocked version of this phone work in the US with AT&T? I've searched the internet for hours, literally, but no one has ever really talked about the idea, none the less said it's a definite yes or no.

The phone aspect of the Moto Droid talks on CDMA, so I don't know how you'd use it. Last I heard, there is a version of the same phone in the works for 3G networks, so just hang in there... it can't be too long (and probably depends more on what carrier will pick it up in your region); different antennas, power amplifier, certification, etc. The US might see a delay for marketing reasons (Cliq is in the US for GSM networks), but I'd be surprised if other parts of the world didn't see a 3G Droid just as soon as certification passes, carrier-specific items are inserted, tested, and delivered...

At this point, it's more a business than technology game, I'd guess...

For GSM network in the US, try "Cliq" on T-Mobile; it's Android 1.5, and different hardware... but try it; you might like it...

No, you missed my point. It exists already outside the US, and I'm asking if the International (GSM) version will work with American GSM providers.

Sorry - you are right; I missed your point. I hadn't seen that the "Milestone" (GSM Droid) was announced for Italy & Germany last week;

It is Quad-band GSM, so you should be able to use an unlocked version w/ a SIM card here.

As for data channel - someone else can chime in; I'm not sure what the constraints / needs will be.

In any case, I would expect that an unlocked version would operate fine as a phone on a GSM network here (but I'll guess for data operation it won't be different than Cliq, so would expect it would work fine on T-Mobile; but you'll only know for sure after trying one).

Thanks, that's what I thought. I don't actually have a data plan with my service provider, so I'm not concerned about mobile data, just if it'd work as a regular phone with AT&T, and as an AWSOME android device on my WiFi at home.
