When I do that the system's first guess is to interpret the letters I type as number codes, and then it also shows in a list the names matching the letters I have typed. Do you get a drop down list with other options? Is the problem only with this one contact?

Send a message via ICQ to eMAyaR Send a message via MSN to eMAyaR
Try setting a default number for the troubled contact. To do this, edit the contact, then long-press the number you want to set as default. This works for email addresses and physical addresses as well.

Good luck!

Make sure you have that contact number set to mobile. Because of a fee that would be involved when sending a text to a land line (because you can convert it to a voicemail) I think the Droid blocks the auto complete from adding "Home" numbers to the drop down. Good luck, hope this helps.
