Phone turns off and on during use

I have a htc droid and when i use any of the applications for more than 5 minutes it shuts off and turns on again. This process reboots up to 5 times. I have even had to take the battery out and wait 5 minutes. This also occures when I'm searching the web. anyone have any ideas?

Is the phone rooted / overclocked?

no it has not been rooted i was told that would void my service contract.
