Texting Keyboard Formats?

Horizontal (landscape) texting is important to me, except I can't figure it out on my phone! You see, I have the Droid Eris, and the touch screen keyboard is wonderful. My friend also has one, and I recently saw him texting with the horizontal way, which I never knew you could do with this phone. Well he told me that you just have to rotate the device and it would go straight to that format of texting. I tried it on mine, and nothing happened whatsoever. So my question is; is there some setting on my phone I have to change? Or is my phone just screwed up and I should take it in to the Verizon store. Any help with this topic would be great. Many, many thanks indeed.

P.S.: I got my phone around Christmas time, if anyone was wondering when I got it.

I bought mine around christmas...sometimes it is slow to switch to horizontal but otherwise i haven't had any problems. will it flip when you are on the browser? if not then you might have a messed up phone and need to take it in.

it's probably not messed up. you may have inadvertently turned it off in your settings. go to Menu --> Settings --> Sound & Display then turn the Orientation on. i think that's what is, i don't quite remember. i flashed my phone to 2.1 a month ago so the menu is a little different

Or perhaps, you are like my boss. He's good with technology, but the android, by default, rotates on counter-clockwise rather than clockwise, which is counterintuitive. Try turning the phone the other way.
