How to use keypad during call?

How do you use the keypad during a call, like when you're connected and have to press 1 for this or 2 for that. My phone won't recognize my pressing, even though it makes the audible tone!

if you're keypad is already up, you're pressing the numbers and it's not working, i'm not sure what the problem is. with my eris, it seems i have to access the keyboard by pressing the bottom left keyboard button, then utilize the numbers. it works for me that way.
