Newbie guide to rooting, debranding and ROMs

Hi,

I'm a reasonably literate IT professional that wants to remove the Orange branded 2.2 update on my desire. Despite assurances from Orange that it would be pretty much vanilla they have added bloatware, disabled wifi tethering and worse regressed usb tethering so that also doesn't work.

I'd like to read up a concise description of the processes required and options I have to install a non-branded ROM and prevent Orange from screwing me up in the future with radio updates etc..

Can anyone help?

just anwered the same question on the desire sub thread.. with orange Desires.. there is something you have to do before doing anything as there is a very high chance of bricking the device.. sorry I can not remember as I only read it and forgot as I ave a vodafon desire sorry, read and you should find it.. or as in the Q&A section of the desire on xda developers... enjoy!
