In a recent interview with the BBC, Microsoft’s Steve Ballmer spoke at length about the search industry and how the current ecomonic downtime could have an impact on technology.

As the interview progressed to* mobile search, Ballmer was asked about his thoughts on Android and how it will effect the Windows Mobile platform - he seemed less than impressed:

“You’ve got to remember Android is version one….and it looks like version one,” he said.

“They’ve got one handset maker, we’ve got 55. They’re available through one operator, we’ve got 175.”

Ballmer also noted that an open-source solution would not be attractive to phone manufacturers predicting that Windows Mobile* would stay ahead of the likes of Blackberry, Apple’s iPhone and Google Android for some time to come.

In part, I agree with him. It's a pretty basic looking phone especially when I look at HTC's other phones. This is only version one and I wouldn't be surprised to see several phones over the next year that get a lot better. Still, I think Microsoft is just worried about what Android could do to their share of the mobile market.

WM's problem is that they are not open source...they only tell you about their problems after they have supposedly fixed them. On the flip side, Android and others like it are open source. What this means, such as when speakig of the Linux operating system, is that when a problem is found, you have almost the entire world working towards a solution.

Having been a Tmobile Wing user for a while - therefore a WM user by default - I have to say yes, I miss Office Mobile, yes, I miss being able to dump my apps to the SD card. Will I give up my G1 and go back to the Wing? Hell no! These problems will be corrected by open source.
