Must admit i was a bit surprised to read that the Android Market won't support for a revenue sharing model for developer apps.

Quote:
... "We want the next killer application to be written for cell phones, not the Internet," Rubin told lucrative for some content creators. To combat this, Rubin said the Android Market will offer the ability to offer free trials of apps before customers have to buy them. Apple doesn't officially allow this, but many developers get around this by offering "Lite," or stripped down versions of the apps.

Additionally, developers may be drawn to the open nature of the Android Market, which will not be as restrictive as Apple's offerings. Apple has recently made moves to ease growing frustration with developers.

While the Android Market will only initially allow free apps in the store when the G1 launches, paid apps will eventually be offered and Google will not be taking a cut of the revenue. By contrast, Apple takes a 30% share of any app sold in its store. ...

Not too sure what developers will make of this. Perhaps some kind of subscription service is on the cards?

Information about the Android Market is a little hard to find, i know a number of app developers have been wondering about how the revenue system will work.

Developers should like this then. Means they keep 100% of the sale of their application in the market.

I like the free trial idea, google are doing the right by giving the application devs as much freedom as possible.

Whether or not this changes down the road remains to be seen, but it's good to see google 's approach to the app store in comparison to Apple's.

Yes, this is a totally cool decision to keep out of the revenue sharing aspect of this. I would *much* rather incorporate any revenue sharing into my projects than have revenue extortion incorporated on me any-day.

This keeps the odds as even as possible.

Sure, I suppose they (the developers) could do that, but it would not honestly be in there best interest. The iPhone mandates a 30% cut of whatever the developer sells their application for PLUS has to play the "mother may I" game with Apple.

Android development does not impose this type of draconian price structure measure and depending on the application could offer a more relaxed price structure (compare a application that would cost $50 one time to a $5/ month fee) without needing permission from any one corporation.

I will like to see how this plays out, I am placing my chips on Android because I think that its openness will attract more developers and corporate partnerships rather than code-monkeys and corporate dictatorships.

But that is just me.

I sense that there will soon be a site for freeware apps for the G1 to be installed via USB, a lot of developers are not out there to make money, there are plenty of hobbyist...
