Sure, I suppose they (the developers) could do that, but it would not honestly be in there best interest. The iPhone mandates a 30% cut of whatever the developer sells their application for PLUS has to play the "mother may I" game with Apple.
Android development does not impose this type of draconian price structure measure and depending on the application could offer a more relaxed price structure (compare a application that would cost $50 one time to a $5/ month fee) without needing permission from any one corporation.
I will like to see how this plays out, I am placing my chips on Android because I think that its openness will attract more developers and corporate partnerships rather than code-monkeys and corporate dictatorships.
But that is just me.
