The main difference between the Android market and the Apple store is that Apple decide what is allowed into the store, and what isn't. The major benefit of Google's approach is that anyone can submit their application to the masses, keeping in tradition with the open source way of life.

However, the downside to this approach is that anyone with half an idea of how to construct a few lines of code can enter their idea of what an application is. The result being, the marketplace is full of half baked ideas, untested software and kids rating 5 stars saying "first" before they have even looked at the software. Conversely, there is a fair amount of *very* good applications out there that are being developed with freedom in mind.

Now consider the "paid apps" that will be introduced into the marketplace, no one is going to part their hard earned cash for some third rate application. If Google have any sense (and I am a firm believer that they have more sense than their competitors) then they will follow Apple's lead and filter out the bad apps from the paid market and offer the developers to keep it in what is currently the "free" market.

This would result in two independent markets, one like we have now with free applications that anyone can submit to, and another market where the apps warrant a contribution from the community with respect to a few pounds/dollars/yen/yadda yadda yadda. This would also stop(limit) the moronic youth from downloading just to yell "first".

I hope this is the way the market will eventually work, if not then it will fail. Downloading rubbish you have to pay for will give Android a BAD name.

As it stands now the Market is very much in need of an overhaul, even just adding the ability to upvote/downvote comments would be a massive improvement.

It'll be interesting to see how Google balance the sharing of the free and paid applications, but then again who's best to decide what apps are worth paying for Google or us?

I think i know where your coming from Andor. But You would be p****d if you payed lets say £5 for a app you thought looked good from the reviews then turned out to be shocking. Just cause i like something doesn't mean you will like it. The problem with free speech is everyones entitled to a opinion no matter how good or bad it is. The other way to do it. Would be to have a free trail period say 24hours. Then that way we will be able to decide for ourselves if a app is good or bad.

yeah, a free trial period would be good, but unlikely. i think they are gonna take iphone's cydia and sidekick's catalog's approach of showing you maybe 5 screen shots of the apps in action. btw, the first comment was right on the money when they said that 2 markets would be good. hopefully google does that, keeps the android market free and add another market for s*** we gotta pay for.

All of you have great points. But my gut feeling is, developers will be able to charge for apps, and the more savvy ones will build in a "trial period" for better conversion rates. If they dont, then Android App review websites will be a great source to look to before buying.

Here are a few: http://www.google.com/search?q=andro...eview+websites
