Getting google and market to accept device

Hi;
My problem is the following ...even though I hae a google account the market wll not recognized my device .Apparently is ro generic and google doesn't recognize it, Is there a way around this? maybe downloading 2.3? Market has some of yhe best apps .....would like some ,any help would be great. thanks
