I recently purchased an extremely cheap stylus for my G1. The page assured me it would work with the G1 (link below). The results were shoddy at best when tapping (read pushing hard as hell) and nonexistent when sliding.

Has anyone had anyone else had any luck (good/bad) using a stylus with the G1?

Hi,

I know how you feel. I fell the victim of the same sh...ty stylus. It looks nice however it's good for NOTHING except tapping. It looks as if there's some kind of capacitive piece of rubber inside that when the tip presses against it makes the contact. Thank God that junk ran me only $4.99 from Amazon.

It's an ABSOLUTE NO NO..Waste of money

A stylus will not really work with the G1. The G1 has a capacitive touch screen (meaning it only responds to the electrical currents of human contact). This is what allows you to use the sliding motions and be able to do the "push and hold" things that we love so much with our G1. The Apple iPhone has the same type of screen, and that is what allows it to do the gestures and things that the Apple users love. Hopefully some day we can have multi touch as well.

Kingrst...you are correct if you talk about a "regular" kind of stylus (plastic tip). These styluses though do work but due to a very poor design they are simply a garbage. The capacitive screen requires electric current pass through and since these styluses have metal casing and conductive rubber tip which makes them work. The problem though is that the tip is formed in a shape of a kind of bladder, and therefore needs to be pressed in order to make a contact with an internal metal tip which in turn is connected to the metal casing WHICH you hold on to.

I was using an extremely cheap one, there are ones that cost $20 plus on the market. Anyone try one of those?

Do people NOT UNDERSTAND?!

A stylus is NOT meant to be used with the G1.

I'm quite aware how projected capacitance works, however there are styli on the market that tout the ability to work with this type of touch screen. This discussion is not about the theory of projected capacitance, but on whether any of this specific type of styli actually works.

Perhaps you should actually read the forum before you go 0 to superiority complex in 4 seconds.

several of the ones listed on this page say they are a "capacitive tap stylus", perhaps ALL of them are, and are not labeled accurately?

Seems to me people are getting away from the stylus, and thus this kind of tech being imported to capacitive screens isn't quite up to par just yet....either that or the ones that work are going to be very expensive, harder to find, and might not be worth it right now.

Have you tried window shopping at C/Net and Amazon.com -- if for no other reason than to read the reviews?

Just my two cents.

This isn't about my OCD, ADD, nor my superior-than-you issues.

This is about a few unfortunate G1 owners (you and ordxpres who fell the victim of the same sh...ty stylus) being cheated. You two, and many many more G1 owners were lied to by someone trying to sell you a faulty product. It happens all the time.

Sorry your were swindled, bamboozled, tricked, duped, screwed, fandangled, or otherwise insulted by either myself, or the sellers of your stylus. It sucks, really it does!

I've got 10 (or 20? ) perfectly capable ergonomically enhanced styli that work better than anything you can buy on the market today.

But think about this (seriously brrrro!):
1.) HTC did not intend the G1 to be used with a stylus. If it was, there would be an integrated stylus holder built-in. So go ahead and buy your stylus to make you feel *special* and then post back here when you lose it.
2.) How many precious seconds of your day will you gain/lose by using a stylus? Take a few seconds to retrieve it from your pocket - check. Do some taps/swipes, and place it back in your pocket, cause now your have to type on the keyboard. Uh-Oh! You have a notification! With your dominant hand, get your stylus againnn from your pocket, and swipe it down across the top of your screen, select your notifying message, and resume typing while you hold the stylus in your mouth.
3.) How many hours of intense screen tapping are you planning to do with your stylus? One hour? Two hours? Go ahead and set your stylus down and stretch your writing hand out, we wouldn't want you to get a cramp.

(this is all in good fun. don't get all pissy. it really is kinda funny, doncha think?)
