I heard there is an on screen keyboard available for the G1. I have yet to find it. Was someone pulling my chain? Is there one really available, if so where is it?

There is none yet that I know of... but thats just me, I heard rumors say we could have one in a future update from T-Mobile & Google... If not though I wouldn't worry, I'm sure a developer will create one

According to the Android Roadmap we should see this functionality added in early 2009.
Quote:
Input method framework (IMF)
This feature will enable support for input methods other than physical keyboards, for example soft keyboards. IMF will also enable application developers to provide IME (see below) applications based on the framework.

I much prefer having a physical keyboard to press, it allows for faster typing as i know without looking at the screen that my 'presses' have actually worked.

With the "Chomp" application, there is an on-screen keyboard, but the letters are teeny tiny. So, you can give that a go.

There is news of an update coming early 2009 that is supposed to give the option of the on screen keyboard, ability to record video, and a few other features, but of course there is no exact date of that release. i have found a browser in the android market that gives you an on screen keyboard, it's called STEEL. Try it out!

Just wait for the cupcake update. ChompmSMS is only for text messages and STEEL is a web browser with autorotation and the virtual keyboard. Cupcake will have an onscreen keyboard for any input wether its for the homescreen google search, sms, web, or anything. Save memory, be patient.
