I want to purchase a new android phone (verizon customer who currently uses Palm Treo). Should I be concerned about Eris with the 1.5 OS and poor battery life?

You're doing the right thing by poking around this (and other) droid forums.

If you search these forums for "Palm" "Treo" and the like you'll see lots of ideas.

I personally am not so bothered by the battery life, as I've had lots of phones and plenty of them needed charging a lot. You just need to have a charger by your bed, and one in your car. If you spend a lot of time at a particular workspace you might eventually want to keep a charger there too, especially if you don't drive 30 min. to get home with your phone plugged in.

If you value your contacts and calendar you should move from your treo fairly soon. It won't be long and even Palm will force you to convert some of your data. If you use Palm Desktop that came with your Treo, don't "upgrade" it without expecting problems and data loss.

I've got the Droid and am currently moving my data from my Treo.

I also went from Treo 755p to Motorola Droid. When looking at Droid v Eris, I almost got Eris. I wasn't worried about android 1.6 on Eris - there will ibe an update for Eris changing it to 2.0. That was confirmed by Verizon staff. I can't say much about battery life.

BTW

When you make the move you'll probably want to move your calendar and contacts, and other stuff too. Check this out, and let us know (here or there) how you do it, and it goes for you.

there's at least one thread in Googles help system that is troublesome on this matter, so do your homework on these forums first.
