HT-03A miniSD Card maximum size?

Hello. I am in Tokyo, and picked up the HT-03A, which I believe basically the same as the HTC Magic model available in other countries.

It came with a 2GB miniSD card, which I wanted to upgrade to 8GB. But the guy at the store told me that it could only handle a maximum of 4GB.

I thought I've seen on the internet that the HTC Magic can handle 8GB.

So was the guy at the shop wrong, or is the Japanese model different?
