My G1 camera looks more like a heat sensor than an actual photo, is this a setting or did the camera break? please help

My camera on the G1 is also doing this.

I just got a refurbished phone that started doing this. It goes away when I reset the phone, so I am not sure how to get the tmobile store to believe me. Did anyone ever get this resloved?
