I believe that the G1 is an amazing phone, but the only reason why I will not buy it is the "proprietary headphones".
I just wondering, why is it a such a big deal to put a "3.5mm stereo audio connector" on a phone? I would not mind to pay a few bucks more for it.
Would you?
Ok, there is an adapter, but who would carry around the phone and the adapter? It's not a comfy solution even if it is small, you can loose it easily. I believe that to have an extra adapter in the package or the connector already on phone, it would costs the same anyway.

just to correct, it's not proprietary, it's USB mini, big difference. The samsung upstage has a proprietary headphone jack, as nobody else but samsung makes that sort of connector.
HTC always puts USB mini ports on their phones. I have no idea why. Perhaps it makes the phone more or less "tidy" looking because it doesn't have multiple ports coming out of it. The supplied headphones are good, so I don't mind, and plus, I wouldn't use the G1 has a music player -- there's not enough battery life for it.

Taiwanese cell phone manufacturers standardized on Mini USB some years ago (way to go!). HTC actually uses what they call something like USB Extended (USB_EXT) which includes additional connections for audio, etc. You can look around for more info, I'm not an expert on all this stuff.

A mini USB is a nice connector to have, but a headphone really needs an 3.5mm stereo audio connector...
Why? Well, just in case you have with you only your phone and you feel like listening to some music, you just grab a pair of regular headphones from the store nearby and problem solved...

Or you can take the included headset (including microphone and volume control) with you. I keep mine in my backpack. There are also a number of different adapters, ones that even act like splitters so you can have the headphones plugged in while charging the phone. Reasonably priced and most are pretty compact, easy to take with you.

yeah, it sounds like a good idea to have the phone and a backpack full of adapters...
...what was I thinking?

I guess what you were thinking is that if you blow something completely out of proportion you might amuse some people with your attempt at humor. I said one adapter, not a backpack full of them. I know reading isn't nearly as fun as complaining and frosting your own ego, but who knows, it might actually lead to a discussion.
But then again, perhaps it would take a backpack full of adapters for you to get anywhere. Let's be on the safeside, you probably need two backpacks full of adapters.

Once stereo bluetooth has been pushed out to our phones, (some) people will be saying "who needs a 3.5mm connector anyway"
