What's the likelihood of an application to come around like TomTom for the Android platform? Is the GPS module in the unit fast enough to be able to handle turn by turn? I've read that the iphone's isn't accurate enough.

It's the one feature I think I'll miss from my Windows Mobile phone when I make the switch.

I dont think your going to have an issue with turn by turn, did you happen to check any videos of the Goog1e Maps on the G1.. there sick. If they have a GPS Compass that is extremely intelligent_ then there will be no issue for turn-by-turn capability___ also expect in the future voice functionality. =D

Tomtom's GPS is build on Linux too. Maybe they can port their app to Android?

Mainly I'm concerned about traveling at high speeds in cars and the GPS being able to keep up. It's one of those things that the iPhone has an issue with (at least from what I've seen). On freeways it always seemed to lag behind.

I think the gps is solid enough to support a turn-by-turn navigation app. It lags behind only slightly when you're out in open skies and is with 10 meters usually of an intersection.

I believe its weak point is the initial fix. I've had trouble inside a building sitting right next to a long wall of windows and not found a single decent fix.. the assisted part of the gps put me in a park a mile away, which was legit as far as cell towers go. Even when outdoors walking, I've had to wait upwards of three minutes for a satellite fix. Decent and tolerable but lacking when compared to the market.

Either way I think tomtom and garmin will wait until they can charge for their product.

I don't understand why this question even arose. The GPS device used on G1 is no better and no worse than on any other HTC phone.

As for TomTom, I am 99.9% sure we will see it on G1. If they managed to port it to iPhone (but Apple banned it) they will definitely do it for Android.

I remember reading somewhere that turn-by-turn 'real-time' functionality isn't allowed in the android apps (3rd party). Some kind of patent/licensing problem.

I may be wrong but im sure i read something to that effect.

Actually I have just read that AndNavi had that functionality and Google didn't allow them to put in on th market b/c of ToS. WTF? Need to explore more...

EDIT: here's the answer http://www.andnav.org/index.php/faq-...ce-in-andnav1-

Basically it can't be ddone using Google Maps, but if say TomTom ported their app to android it would be fine (and paid of course).
