hi there, thinking of buying a Motorola dext soon but Orange signal not brilliant in my house. I use an app on my e71 that automatically connects to my wifi when in range and defers back to gsm/3g when i leave the house. There are a few apps that do this for s60 phones, psiloc connect, birdstep smart connect etc...

Anything for android?

Steve

If you enable wi-fi then it will automatically switch to wi-fi if it can else will fall back to network. However, turning on wi-fi will drain the battery a bit quicker.

AFAIK the phone (thus any app) can't "look" for a wi-fi signal without wi-fi being enabled.

Thats great news, thanks Zebedee.... I have a Nokia E71 and it doesnt do that automatically, if an app (such as email) needs a constant internet connection then it stays on the one you last chose until you manually change it. You can get the app I mentioned above that does it automaticallly though. Obviously with the hero and dext needing a constant net connection for the fb/twitter updates then its ideal that it chooses the best connection itself.

Thanks, again

LocationBot can automatically switch on your WiFi when you are at your house and turn it off when you leave. It will also automatically reconnect to the WiFi if the connection drops.
