I'm a bit curious about this on my HTC Hero (T-Mobile G2 Touch varient)... if i go into Settings > Apllications > Manage applications in the list that is displayed there in one just called "IM" which has an icon of a red and a blue speech bubble leading me to belive that it's some sort of instant messanger application. But it doesn't display at all in the list of applications so there is no way of launching it.

Now I know there are a whole range of system apps in the manage list but does anyone know what this "IM" is and is it a usable IM client?

It's the settings icon for GoogleTalk. At some point they changed the icon in the menu for a speech bubble.

Thanks, i was just working my way through lots of messaging apps, although I've sort of settled on Meebo.

Personally I ditched meebo for eBuddy. In my opinion it's an all-round better app.

Ebuddy has a nice interface, but I didn't like the fact you have to create an account with them and register all your IM IDs with that account.

Fair enough but consider this:

What ever IM app you use be it on the phone or PC that allows multiple accounts, you are giving one piece of software all your info. This is the same for example if you use Pidgin / Trillian etc. on the PC.
If you are using Meebo then you're entering all your info with that and it stores them.
The idea of an eBuddy ID is to make life easy if you use multiple PC's. It allows you to take your personal IM settings wherever you go, where-ever you log in.

The single log on makes life nice and easy and you can select which accounts are signed in to at the start.

Also, Meebo plagued me with logging out and connection issues of which I've never had one with eBuddy.
