So, all of these ads for Telenav make the program look pretty sweet. But at $10 per month? I thought this was OPEN SOURCE! Hasn't anyone created an equivalent yet?

Anyway, does anyone know of even a simple GPS navigator app that's free or at least a little cheaper than $10/month? I did a search for GPS in the market, and only got things like "run tracker" etc.

Thanks.

There's AndNav and AndNav 2 Beta, there're nice, but they need internet acces, 'cos they don't have support for maps in phone memory (GPX etc.)
AndNav 2 can save route downloaded from the internet, but this is only beta for now...

AndNav2 does also map preloading, while you have Internet and use it later. Just specify how much space on your SD card you allow it to use and it will do the rest. It does nicely show your location on the map, but the search for an address or routing works only in Europe, so far. It was supposed to work in CA, too, as the first state, but I tried it there, while on our trip to Grand Canyon and it didn't work.

My entire family has had Telenav’s service for the past 2-3 years, and we will never switch. I don’t recall the exact price of the service back then, but they did give my entire family the first month free. Now I’m paying around 40 bucks a month for the four of us, which in my opinion is a great deal. I first saw TeleNav mentioned in the New York Times and then I went to their website: www.telenav.com $10/month is a great deal, especially considering it offers more features than a $600 standalone unit.

A new option just popped up last week. CoPilot entered the andoid market and released their GPS navication software for gphones. http://www.alk.eu.com/copilot/android/

Pros:
- $35 ONE TIME LICENSE (US. . different pricing in UK and EU)
- Real clean, top notch UI with a ton of features.
- Maps load on SDCard
- Maps stored locally so no data connection required when driving.

Cons:
- Horrible setup instructions. . .ok no instructions. . .just trial and error install.
- Laggy touchscreen input when it first starts.
- Map downloads directly to device can be slow (and require a WiFi connection).
- Map dowload to pc and transfer to phone does not appear to work.

I would give it a 3.5 out of 5 stars personally. It's a MUCH cheaper alternative to telenav and frankly a better UI. Just gotta get past some of the cons mentioned above.
