Hey,

Wondered if someone could tell me whether Android developed applications will work on any/all java enabled cell phones or whether they would need the android platform installed in order to run?

thanks!

I would think that it would need the Android platform, this is because there are libraries that do no exist in the normal Dev kit that Java provides (J2ME) which are used on a Android app...

Android uses a different GUI model, and a package library which extends JavaSE (standard desktop type).

This is because SE has an open license whereas JavaME is expensive and a lot harder to extend.

Android isn't affected by the JavaME license (which covers all Java on Mobile devices iirc) because the Java source code is compiled into Dalvik bytecode rather than JavaME bytecode.

You may be able to use multiple project targets etc to allow a JavaME and an Android app to share the same logic classes, but Android may have better ways of doing certain things than ME.
