You can try the SnapPhoto application (see Market). it’s much better than built-in app (prefocus, white balance, selftimer, size setting, vibration reduction etc.).

But unfortunately no application can improve inconceivable very WEAK G1 CAMERA (no flash light, bad lens but 3.2 megapixel resolution - what that's good for?, no built in video rec. application and only one poor video recording application on Market (Video Recorder - un-updateable at this time)... all this in compare to my old 3 years old nokia N70. Why in 2009 at this kind of phone, HTC?

yeah SnapPhoto is the way forward but unfortunately the fact that the inbuilt G1 camera is so so poor makes taking photos a hassle no matter how good the app is.
