Live in CA, new law says don't touch phone; asked T-mobile for phone w/ voice activation and they sold me the Wing. It had a lousy (very lousy) speaker so I asked for a different phone, they swore the G1 would satisfy my needs: Internet access, qwerty keyboard (real, not faux) and voice activation. 2 out of three might be OK for some, but I want all three.

Will there ever be an app that will make the G1 hands free? I understand the iphone has such an app: say call "blank", a voice from the iphone says "blank?" and you say yes. (That's how the Wing worked)

What do you think?

The closest thing to that is the "Voice Dialing" app that comes with the phone.

Yeah, I've been using the voice dialer but if a cop sees me, I'll get a ticket plus the fact that in order to see what choices I'm being given by the G1, I have to put on my glasses then touch the correct spot on the screen to either accept or not accept. I need an app that will use a voice that will respond giving me the oppy to agree with its choice. Oh well, perhaps I'll just tell T-Mobile I want out of my contract and go with the iphone instead. Thanks for your response.

In my opinion I've been defrauded by T-Mobile and I'll go to the California Utilities Commission and tell them so. I can't be held to a contract when I've been lied too. I'd rather not do it that's why I was hoping there was a G1 app to help T-Mobile (and Google) comply with state law.

So I wonder more than half a year later did you guys find anything that could work as a proper voice dialer?

I've seen nothing but one would think voice dialer combined with bluetooth might be the easiest and most feasible method

Sure, Voice Dialer and Bluetooth is what I use. But it's still a pain.
First of all it's not a true voice dial. You gotta confirm the selection by tapping on the screen.
Also even this doesn't work from the sleep mode. When the phone asleep a tap on the bluetooth doesn't wake it up.
I only hope that Google will make this working better in the future releases.
Btw any of you guys who already got a 1.6 Donut OTA did you notice any difference in the voice dial function?

Truly stumped when I realized even in Android 2.0 / Motorola Droid that this otherwise wonderful phone has such a lousy voice dialing option. The voice recognition is stellar, but my cranky old WinMo phone had vastly superior voice dialing option. When it had multiple options (such as "Call (contact)" returned multiple numbers, it read each option (Home, Mobile, etc.) aloud and waited for you to say Yes. Having to open an app (from the screen), then talk, then click on the screen again, is really pretty much against the very concept of "voice dialing" - what we have currently is apparently "voice search in phone numbers only".

Any chance anyone working on the O/S and/or app can step up and say "yeah it'll allow actual voice dialing in version 2.1" or something?

Wow! I can't believe this is still a problem in 2.0... I think I gotta get rid of the Android phone for now. Safe dialing while driving is really important to me.
