while reading the article it really seems to try and pit the open source community against the android OS because of how its come about.
but logically, Google are trying to create a viable alternative OS for phones which can be tweaked and modified by people with the skillsets, i think they recognise that this is not a massive target audience.
By creating the 'ground zero' base of the OS where developers can then come and build on top of or dig into or whatever they want to do, its also an OS that an end-user without the skills to do anything special can just pick up the phone and use it, not go and change anything to get it to work some special way.
If the project were open source from conceptualisation to implementation, i dont think we would see a ready off the shelf product for another few years anyway.
because as good as the internet is, its far from a room full of people helping eachother over the shoulder or throwing questions around.
on the internet, you have to type a question into a field, press a button, wait for a reply by tapping f5 till someone does the same.
Google has created an OS that they can give to anyone who knows how to use a phone, the user can either use it as they would any other phone software, or for those with the ability, tweak it to perform how they want it to.
