Working on my first program for the Android platform, when I realized I haven't seen anything about the G1 phone from HTC having an accelerometer. Will it? Either way, would I be better off not expecting one to be available if the support is optional?

Thanks in advance,
Ewan

No official word as of yet (Only a couple of days until we know for sure), but i'd be surprised if an acceloremeter wasn't built-in to the device.

I initially thought it was pretty much guaranteed - given the Google's Street View mapping feature that's been shown.

But on closer inspection is seems that was achieved by the Dreams/G1 built-in compass.

Quote:
"the Dream reportedly includes an accelerometer that can be used with Google's Street View mapping feature: users can pivot the phone itself to change the view and look at map markers from the same angle they see in real life." - Source
Quote:
"Adding to the effect is the Dream’s built-in compass, which has been employed here to track the movement’s of the demonstrator’s hands: as he turns, so to does the Street View in Google Maps."

So perhaps the better question is, does the standard say that an Android Phone HAS to have an accelerometer or not? I read it as being "optional". If that's the case, then is there a way to determine if it's present or not? Then I could use it if it's there, and if not I could "degrade" to have touchscreen buttons to be used instead.
