Help getting started.

I want to write my own apps.

I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 - the Karmic Koala

I was trying to follow the steps on this page:
http://developer.android.com/sdk/adding-components.html

I get stuck on the "Installing SDK Components" step

I open the shell script "/Installing SDK Components/tools/android"

then I go to "Available Packages" on the left.

When I click the triangle near "https://dl-ssl.google.com/android/repository/repository.xml"

i get the message

Failed to fetch URL https://dl-ssl.google.com/android/re...repository.xml, reason: HTTPS SSL error. You might want to force download through HTTP in the settings.

How do I get the android package manager to work?

Is there a way to use Synaptic Package Manager to get the needed packages?
