Variable not getting passed using putExtra

I'm trying to send a value to another class using the putExtra method. I get no errors, but when I extract the value using getExtras, it always comes across as a value of 0 (zero.) I am passing the key "_id" and the value "-1". Is it possible that this key has some special role? I ask because I send "cl_id" with a particular value and it comes across just fine. I don't want to use a different key because I'm obviously passing the id of a row number from a data cursor. Any ideas on what I might be doing wrong? I'm at work right now and don't have access to the code. I'll post the relevant parts when I get home tonight.
