I want to transfer files from my desktop to my G1 one but when I plug in the USB cord and try to activate the mass storage option it never appears. Ive tried to unmount my memory card and reinstall it but it doesnt work. My computer recognizes the device and my G1 shows that th cord is connected but I just cant get the option to appear. Any ideas on what the problem is?

when you plug your G1 into your PC via the USB cable, do you get a notification at the top of the phone? If do, drag the notification area down, press the USB notification and choose the mount option that appears.
dont forget to unmount via the pc, and remove the USB cable once you have finished (removing the cable is vital, or the phone will still think its connected)

I too am having a problem when trying access the MicroSD card via USB cable connection to the phone. When I plug the cable into the phone, I open the notification at the top of the screen and choose the option to mount the card. At that point nothing else appears to happen. My computer doesn't seem to recognize that there is a card available. However, when I take the card out of the phone and place it directly in the card reader for my desktop, it immediately opens a window for the card. From there I can drag any files I want to the card. Although this technically works, I'd prefer to just plug in the cable and sync my phone with my computer. It's much easier!

Guys, make life easier for yourself and go buy a little cheap MicroSD to USB adapter.
Yes, you will have to pop-out your SDcard, but in the long-run it will save you alot of hassle.

My primary goal is to not remove the MicroSD card from the phone at all. I want to plug in the phone, sync and go... Purchasing the adapter saves me only the step of bending over to slide the card into the reader vs. sliding it into the adapter sitting on my desk.

Well, in that case what operating system are you running on your pc?
Make sure that you give your pc time to recognize the device and install the appropriate drivers for a mass-storage usb device.
No, you do not need to install any additional drivers for your device to be recognized as long as you are running Win 2k-Vista/Server 03-08.
Once you plug in your usb cable, give your g1 a few moments to recognize the fact that it has been plugged into your pc. Shortly after plugging your G1 up to your pc your G1 should display a notification on the top-left of the screen. When it does, drag down the menu and tap on the mass-storage/USB mode. Your computer should then pop-up the autorun menu asking you what you want to do with the device.
Remember, patience is the key. If all else fails, power down your G1 and then restart it.
Also, if you are running linux you might have to mount the volume manually.

I'm running Vista Home Premium SP1 (32-bit).
I have gotten the notification near the top of the G1 screen, which provides me the option to Mount the card. I did so and waited at least a minute or more, with no response from the computer. I'm certain it's not a hardware issue because I've used the same USB port for my programmable remote, which also utilizes a USB/Mini-USB cable.
I'm using Android RC33. Are there any known issues with recent versions of Android when plugging a cable into the phone?

There are no issues that I am aware of at the current time.
I am using JesusFreke's RC33 1.43 and my PC is running Vista Ultimate x64 Sp1 and Ubuntu 8.10 x64(Intrepid) and I have no problems with either OS. I have to manually mount the G1 from time to time, but that is not prob for me.
With windows you never can tell for certain what the problem is. I have been dealing with angry Vista customers ever since it's RTM release.
Try making sure you have the latest updates and you might want to try switching to another free USB port.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll give it another go. Otherwise, I'll keep my fingers crossed that Win7 may alleviate any issues I'm having.
