Hi lasagolf,

I have used Universal Androot on my HTC phone and have had no problems. It requires nothing special and can give you root access.

You don't need root access to tether using PdaNet however. I have used the free version for a while now. Maybe a couple of years. The paid version is pretty expensive compared to most Android apps but if you want to do HTTPS you have to have it.

I don't know if they work on Thunderbolt or not but they've always worked ok for me. In fact my less than dependable 4G hotspot wasn't working yesterday on 4G or 3G but my phone and PdaNet had no trouble at all.

Hi lasagolf,

I'm sorry, I don't have a Thunderbolt. I've used other HTC phones for a couple of years and don't have any real complaints. Of course you probably already know about this place but it says it is devoted to the Thunderbolt.

I have my HTC phone to develop on and I'm really not a power user.

Hope this helps.

pdanet says that i can no longer use the free version. It wants me to buy the advanced pdanet. I was trying to get by tethering without paying. Is there anything else out there that will enable me to tether free?
thanks

Hi lasagolf,

I don't know what you mean. Get free pdanet here:

http://www.junefabrics.com/android/index.php

But if you need to use HTTPS you need to get the full version.

Hope this helps.
