Hello everyone,

I am a T-Mobile customer, I don't have a data plan. I recently got the G1 from my older brother who has a data plan, and his gmail account is the primary on the phone.

Is there a way for me to change the primary to one of my gmail accounts? Could I do this with the factory reset even though I do not have a data plan? Or will it ask to be activated once again with a data plan, something I do not have and do not plan on getting anytime soon. Has anyone tried this? Thanks for any help!

In theory you should be able to go to Settings -> SD & Phone Storage and select Factory data reset on the bottom of that screen. This should reset everything to factory defaults and allow you to attach the phone to a new gmail account.

Don't follow the above just to change your gmail account! Although it is the perfect answer to resetting the entire phone. If you want to change your mail account without having to reinstall all your apps follow the instructions below that I found in another forum here. Sorry, I didn't catch the original poster's name.

First: your gonna need a google account that's set up with the proper "nickname" that you want (if you don't already have one).

Second: on your phone do the following at the home screen;

press menu ---> settings ---> applications ---> manage applications, you will get a message "Computing application sizes" then it will go to all apps installed on the phone.

Third: scroll down to "Google Apps" and click it to enter it.

Fouth: click on the "Clear data" button, you should get a black triangle with a white "exclamation point" (!) in it after a few seconds in the top left corner.

Fifth: click the back button until you get back to your home screen.

Lastly: pull down the notification menu and click on the message "Your account must be updated" Follow the onscreen instruction till you get to where it asks you to "create" or "sign in", click "sign in" and enter YOUR google account info. You'll get a message saying that you are signing in and it may take up to five minutes... then click "Finish"

Enjoy!!!

This does not work on the Moto Droid (Android 2.01). Anyone have a method that will work without doing a factory reset?

Thank you so much schroncd for your help, this worked perfectly for the Eris and I didn't have to do the factory reset like everyone said you would... BTW, MountainX, I have the Android update on my Eris, I had to do the process a couple times before it took... Thanks again!

The "Clear Data" worked great - but I did not get the white triangle. So after awhile, I turned my phone off/On, Then went to "Data Synchroniztion" and it asked me to enter my new e-mail address and password.
Just thought I would add to the above directions. Thanks so much for those! Everywhere else tells you to factory re-set.

I had to clear data in the Gmail program and then when I backed out it asked for new account information.

GREAT IDEA!! It worked great for me (Samsumg Galaxy). Except I did not receive the message on notification menu. When I turn off/on and then went to "Data Synchroniztion" it asked me to enter my new e-mail address and password.
