What do you think of having a slide bar zoom that comes out if you touch the bottom of the screen in the browser? After you touch the window would allow you to zoom in and out by moving your finger left or write. I think that would be as handy if not more handy than the iphone zoom and definitely better than the button zoom.

I would pretty much like anything besides the current implementation. Though part of the problem is just that the browser tends to be a little sluggish, or so it seems. But having to tug the screen a bit to get the buttons to appear, then tapping on the buttons is a pain. They always seem to respond to like half the taps.

i completely agree, the zoom buttons on the browser are not very good, they definately do what they are supposed to do but makes the browser look sluggish and out dated. new zoom controls would definately be a plus, i really enjoyed the pinch zoom from the iphone. i think that the volume control would be a good zoom key, + for zoom in and - for zoom out, nice, simple, and very convenient when browsing with the screen closed.

Unfortunately, Apple actually has a patent on the gestures used for navigation. Personally, I think it's complete BS (comparable to getting patents on words in the english language), but it would more money and court time than corporations would be willing to risk to find out. The next best alternative I can think of would be using the trackball to zoom, e.g. up/down scrolling on the trackball (or a jog dial on a phone that didn't have one) for zooming in/out.

Between this and some usability concerns I have with the dialer app, I'm eager to see how hard it is to modify the behavior of Android's built in applications.
