So, Ok, as far as I can work out, I should be able to use it to store/listen to music.

According to the instructions .pdf that came on a CD with my G1, I should be able to go into settings and somewhere there should be a menu for SD card & phone storage
Quote:
1.12 Using the Phone as a USB Drive
For easy transfer of music and pictures from your computer to your phone’s memory card, you can set the memory card as a USB flash drive.
To use the phone’s memory card as a USB drive
1. Press HOME > MENU, then tap Settings.
2. Scroll down the screen, then tap SD card and phone storage.
3. Select the Use for USB storage check box, then press BACK twice to return to the Home screen.
4. Connect the phone to your computer using the USB sync cable. Your computer recognises the memory card as a removable disk.
You can now begin exchanging files between your computer and your phone’s memory card.
Note The phone does not recognise the memory card when used as a USB flash drive. Remember to clear the Use for USB storage option when you are done exchanging files with your computer.
which is fine, except that there doesn't appear to be any check box to select this kind of option.

When it's plugged into my system (linux i.e. Kubuntu 8.04) I can run a couple of commands and the device is seen but I have no way of knowing how I actually move music etc onto it - the bloody instructions aren't detailed like that....

Any ideas what I might need to do next ?

It did occur to me that I should see some sort of icon that there's a connected USB device, similar to what I see when my digital camera is connected via USB, but there isn't hence any guidance/ideas/suggestions would be gratefully received.

Or am I mistaken in presuming that I should be able to use my G1 as a music/media player ???

regards

Ok, so I found that. Then it asks me if I want to mount it, I hit Ok.

I get a window open for it, which is fine, but I don't seem to be able to copy music files to it, it seems to start, then stalls. So if I unplug the phone from the usb and plug it back in it seems to copy the album, not as a directory of all music by that artist, just the one album.

If I then try to see if it will play, it tells me that the SD card is busy.

So if I then unplug/plug it back into the USB it still doesn't see any music files but I can then see the availability of the space/SD card again.

Linux based my arse? it doesn't seem to work like any linux I've ever tried.

Surely there must be some sort of location/files where it would store music? For instance, when I've told it to mount, the usb icon (on the phone) disappears. The window that opens, shows me 2 directories, one called DCIM - which I think, is to do with pictures, and the other is called com.tokasiki.android.voicerecorder either of which suggest any kind of location to put music files.

So what I'm alluding to is that something isn't right i.e. there's no way of looking to see where something might be put file-wise.

Or at least that's how it seems to me - but I'm no expert so I might be seeing things wrongly......

Any other ideas/suggestions/assistance that might point me in the right direction would be excellent.

regards

p.s. It might be a stupid question, but how the hell does everyone else transfer/move media or music etc to their phone ?

Ah! now in that, there might be a problem cos that's just something I don't have. Most of the geeks that I know are linux only as well.

I'll just have to keep looking won't I

Hi Marcie -

From what you're saying the problem is that your PC doesn't have an option to export files on the autoplay menu?

When I connect my G1 to my PC, I just select "open folder to view files" on the autoplay menu, then copy the files onto the SD card using drag & drop as normal.

Hope it helps,

S

Yup, i used the same method. Create folders on the SD Card for the filetypes you'd like add and drag'n'drop them across.

I had similar transfer issues in the past, but found trying a different USB port on my PC (USB2.0) fixed the issues.

long press on the icon, the phone will vibrate. You can then drag the icon down to where the menu used to be, this turns into a recycle bin. Drop it in and its gone
